Tips For Combating Neck Stiffness

Blog

If you suffer from neck stiffness, you might find it difficult just to turn your head as you go about your daily activities. A stiff neck can be more than just an annoyance, often causing soreness and rigidity that can be accompanied by regular headaches, shoulder aches and pain that radiates down your arms. Luckily, a stiff neck is often a result of stressed or fatigued muscles other than other serious degenerative conditions such as cervical spine disorders.

Neck stiffness that is caused by muscle strain is often a result taking positions that place your neck in an awkward position, such as slouching on your computer for extended periods. Here is a look at simple, yet effective steps you can take to ease pressure on your neck and reduce or eliminate neck stiffness.

Keep your body properly aligned

Proper postures can help reduce strain on your neck and back, gradually reducing spasms and soreness in your neck and shoulder area. While standing, make it a habit to distribute your weight evenly to the front, back, and sides of the feet. While sitting, try to alternate positions by shifting forward to the edge of the seat with your back straight for a while and then sitting back against the support of the chair to ease pressure on your back and neck. Be sure to align your ears, shoulders and hips in a straight line whenever you sit up straight to distribute your body weight equally on the chair.

Be aware of ergonomics in everyday settings

Becoming aware of what poor ergonomics and posture does to your neck can help you avoid stressful postures and behaviors that aggravate your neck pain and stiffness. Listen to your body and change positions whenever you feel muscles tire, as this leads to slouching and slumping, which can result in a stiff neck. For instance, get up and walk a bit if you are too tired of sitting and use a small pillow to support your neck when working for long hours on your office chair or driving for a long distance.

Other beneficial steps you can take toward easing neck stiffness include positioning your computer screen to your natural, resting eye position and using bags or backpacks that don't force you to strain your neck and back. Finally, avoid texting for long periods with your head slumping forward, and raise the phone to eye level or text while lying on your back to avoid straining your neck.
