3 Things To Know About Having Wisdom Teeth Removed

Health & Medical Blog

One of the reasons that you may need to visit an oral surgeon is to have your wisdom teeth removed. This process should be completed at an early age, so you will be able to heal easily. Most people don't look forward to this procedure, but knowing some details of what is involved may help ease your anxiety about this process.

The costs

The cost of having your wisdom teeth removed will vary per your individual situation and if the tooth has fully erupted from the gum.  The average price of having one wisdom tooth extracted is $75–200. On the other hand, if the tooth has to be surgically removed, this cost will increase to $225–600.

The process

Your oral surgeon will use an anesthetic to numb the area around the tooth. This is critical so that you won't be able to feel any pain while your wisdom teeth are being removed. You may even choose dental sedation that will allow you to be entirely unconscious during the entire procedure. This is a good option if you have a lot of anxiety about this process.

Once you have been numbed or sedated, your oral surgeon will cut around the bone and gum of the wisdom tooth to make it easy to be removed. The tooth itself will then be extracted, and your oral surgeon will place gauze in your mouth prior to leaving the office.

The recovery

If there aren't any complications with the removal of your wisdom teeth, you may be able to recover fully in only a few days. However, it's important to follow the tips listed below to help you recover in the shortest amount of time possible:

  1. Avoid physical activity immediately following the removal of your teeth.
  2. Avoid eating hard foods for a couple days after the extraction.
  3. Avoid using a straw until the gum has healed because doing so could lead to a blood clot.
  4. Avoid smoking after the wisdom teeth extraction.
  5. Avoid touching this area in your mouth with your tongue until it's healed.
  6. Avoid lying flat immediately after the extraction because this could increase bleeding.

There are many benefits to getting your wisdom teeth removed if your dentist recommends you to do so, but do it early on if possible. Be sure to rely on the expertise of an oral surgeon like Altoona Center For Oral Surgery & Maxillofacial Surgery to have this process completed for better long-term dental health.
