3 Types Of Sports Injuries

Health & Medical Blog

Being hurt while engaging in sports is a common problem. Regardless of whether you are playing basketball, soccer or football, the direct contact can lead to injuries occurring. It is in your best interest to know the possible ways that you can get hurt while on the playing field. This may help you to better understand the injury if one does occur.

Shoulder injuries

One of the common injuries of this type is due to a fall you may have or a blow to this area. This can result in you getting a dislocated shoulder when it pops out of the socket.

However, this problem can usually be remedied by having a sports medicine doctor put the shoulder back into place. This area of the body is very mobile and is more flexible than other areas.

Tendon injuries

The elbow and heel are the most prone to tendon injuries. The tendons are fibers that join the muscle to the bone. An injury of this type can happen fast, but may require some time to heal properly.

If you get tendonitis, you may experience some of the symptoms below:

  1. Pain and stiffness that gets worse over time.
  2. Being unable to use this area of your body with ease.
  3. If there is inflammation with the injury, it may become swollen and red.

Be sure to discuss with your sports doctor the proper treatment for this injury and the amount of time you may expect it to heal.

Muscle strain

One of the common complaints of active athletes is muscle strain. This is a result of using all of the muscles when engaging in many of the demanding activities that are involved in sports.

Listed below are some of the symptoms of this injury:

  1. Achy muscles that make it difficult to be mobile.
  2. Swollen areas surrounding the muscle.
  3. Weakness and tenderness around the strained muscle.
  4. Lack of strength in the muscle area that has sustained injury.

If the muscle strain is not severe, the best type of treatment may be completed at home with rest and letting the muscle heal with time.

Being involved in sports can be fun and dangerous. If you have an injury due to engaging in a certain sporting activity, be sure to rely on the expertise of a sports medicine doctor at Interior Alaska Orthopedic & Sports Medicine who can provide you with the most effective type of treatment options.
